Spring 2010 Wrap-up
WOW! Saturday was quite a day, a memorable one for the girls, and their parents and running buddies. The rain held off (yea!) the girls were amazing, thank you all for being there, running, volunteering, encouraging! The staff at Girls on the Run of Atlanta hope you had a great time. Without you, and your energy, time, and dedication, Girls on the Run and Girls on Track could not be the fantastic programs they are, THANK YOU!
Over 1,200 grinning girls, Goody-groomed grown-ups, running buddies and community runners filled the Girls on the Run expo as they prepared to run the New Balance Girls on the Run 5K in Atlanta. More than just a 5K, this end-of-season run was a celebration, made possible in part by our partner, WestStride Running Store and the surrounding businesses!
Kids and parents were seen bopping to the music as they lined up to spin the “Wheel of Fitness” to get goodies and gear from New Balance, Phidippidies, and West Stride. A special thanks to Michael Blair Productions for emceeing the event and playing great pre-race tunes. The Goody Happy Hair Station was a big hit with the crowd, who added some fun Goody hair products to their race bags. Caribou Coffee made sure our early-rising race goers had coffee and ice tea to keep them on their toes, Great Harvest Bread Company covered the pre-race carbs with their famous, whole grain bread and Flying Biscuit provided breakfast for our 100 volunteers. Even those who didn’t run got in some physical fitness by running the Wii at the Kellogg’s rally station. Runners were refreshed post-race with Whole Foods of Buckhead’s energy bars, bananas, bagels and water and race bags generously filled with donations from our various community partners. A Huge thanks to the Atlanta Track Club for providing all the race day equipment.
Once again community spirit permeated the event as over 200 spectators and supporters encouraged and cheered for the runners. Atkinson Park Elementary won the Long Distance Award for traveling the furthest to the event from Coweta County with 34 pre-registered runners and Neighborhood Charter School won the Principal’s Challenge for 36 pre-registered runners. Many schools were close behind with at least one running buddy per girl! The largest community group of runners was from Alston & Bird, LLC and CBeyond brought the largest group of volunteers.
In honor of our 10th Anniversary “Celebrating a Decade of Running Strong!” special guest, Atlanta Council Founder, Anna Hunter and her daughter joined us this year in celebrating the girls accomplishments! There were lots of accomplishments to recognize Saturday morning, Age Group winners received Girls on the Run or WestStride cinch bags and first place winners received a Kenny’s Pie and a bouquet from Bloominghill Florists, gift certificates from Learning Express, Phidippides, Houston’s and WestStride.

Of course our 5K would not be possible without the army of volunteers who came out to help! Every year we are inspired by over 100 volunteers from all over metro Atlanta who give up their Saturday morning to register runners, distribute t-shirts, set-up and break down tents, man water stations and pitch in wherever they’re needed. Our coaches and running buddies were there for the girls, keeping them motivated and strong throughout the race. To show our appreciation for our 150 dedicated coaches, Goody and Lather Salon provided a special Coach’s Thank You gift.
